Rotating 5% categories are the loudest earn rate in credit card rewards — and the most easily wasted. They rotate on a quarterly calendar, they almost always carry a spending cap, and some issuers make you activate them. The 5% is real, but it is real only for a window, only up to a limit, and only if you remember to turn it on.
PerkPro tracks all three of those moving parts so you do not have to hold them in your head.
What "rotating" actually means
The issuer publishes a quarterly calendar — dining one quarter, gas the next — and a category earns the bonus rate only during its window. PerkPro's reward rules carry effective dates, so a rotating category is counted only while it is live. The day the window closes, that category stops earning the bonus automatically and the card falls back to its base rate. How the engine uses those dates (and your point valuations) to rank your wallet is laid out in how PerkPro picks the right card for every purchase.
The cap is the catch
Rotating categories usually cap at a quarterly spend limit — often $1,500 per quarter. Above the cap, the bonus rate disappears and the card earns its base rate for the rest of the period.
PerkPro tracks cap room per category, and when a single purchase straddles the cap, the engine splits the reward: the bonus rate on the portion inside the cap, the base rate on the rest. You never have to do the long division yourself.
See it before you spend
The spending and caps tracker shows every capped bonus category in your wallet with a progress bar, the dollars you have left, and the date the cap resets. The wallet shows the same cap with its quarter window and a clear warning — "Cap reached — now earning the base rate" — the moment you cross the line.
Optimize at the register
Before you tap, run the store through the merchant optimizer. It shows your wallet ranked by what you would actually earn there, and its reasoning includes how much cap room you have left — so you know whether the 5% will apply to this purchase or whether you are already at the base rate.
Points versus the rotating 5%
A live 5% cashback category can beat a points card in its window, but only up to the cap and only for the quarter. The rest of the year, your points card's earn rate — measured by the cents-per-point value you set — decides which card wins. If you have not set that value, you are comparing a percentage to a mystery. Read what your credit card points are actually worth to fix that.

Habits that actually capture the 5%
- Activate the category if the issuer requires it — an unactivated 5% earns nothing, and PerkPro cannot opt in for you.
- Front-load the spend early in the quarter so you do not rush at the end or miss the window.
- Do not burn cap room on a category another card covers better year-round; save the 5% for where it is unique.
- Watch the reset date. When the quarter rolls over, the cap refills and a new category takes over — plan for both.
Try it before signing up
Guest mode lets you add cards, log purchases, and watch cap progress without creating an account. Everything you build as a guest carries over the moment you sign up.
A note on trust
PerkPro provides informational estimates, not financial advice, and rotating category calendars change — always confirm the active categories and caps with the issuer before you rely on them. We may earn a commission on card application links, but that never influences which of your own cards we tell you to use: the recommendation engine has no idea whether a card pays us anything.
